All Day

A quick review of some of the basic laws of Tisha B'Av

Eating and Drinking

  1. No eating or drinking, (including rinsing your mouth and brushing teeth)
  2. If medicine is required - swallowing capsules or bitter tablets without water is permitted.
  3. Like Yom Kippur - The ill, elderly, pregnant, or nursing are required to fast, unless a doctor says that fasting may injure health, in which case it is best to discuss with me.
  4. Boys up to twelve years old and girls up to eleven are not required to fast the entire day.
  5. Those not required to fast should eat only what is needed.

Bathing and Washing

  1. Bathing for pleasure is prohibited even in cold water including the hands, face, and feet.
  2. Ritual washing (netilat yadayim) upon waking, after using the bathroom, touching covered parts of the body, or before praying is permitted, but only up to the knuckles.
  3. One may wash portions of the body that get dirty, and if necessary, may use soap or warm water to remove the dirt or odor.
  4. Washing for medical reasons is permitted.

Creams and Perfumes

  1. Anointing for pleasure is prohibited including oil, soap, cream, ointment, perfume, etc.
  2. Anointing for medical reasons, as well as deodorant, is permitted

Marital Relations

  1. Relations on prohibited on Tisha B’av and therefore Harchakot are also practiced.

Leather Shoes

  1. Shoes made even partially of leather are prohibited. All others types of material are ok.

Learning Torah

  1. Since learning Torah is enjoyable, it is prohibited to learn topics other than those relevant to Tisha B'Av or mourning. (some of the sections that are permissible to learn include Eicha with its midrash and commentaries, portions of the Prophets that deal with the tragedy, the third chapter of Moed Katan (which deals with mourning), the story of the destruction (in Gittin 56b-58a and Sanhedrin 104), and the halachot of Tisha B’Av.

May the merit of our teshuva and the Ahavat Chinam that we strengthen bring about the coming of Moshiach, the building of the 3rd Bet Hamikdash and an everlasting peace.

IMPORTANT DETAILS UNIQUE TO THIS YEAR

WHEN TISHA B’AV FALLS ON SHABBAT AND IS OBSERVED ON SUNDAY:

  1. Mincha on Shabbat is earlier than normal – because we don’t eat Seudat Shelishit in shul, rather everyone should have it at home.

  1. Because it’s Shabbat, there’s no  “Seudat Hamafseket” (re: ash, egg, sitting on floor)

  1. One must finish eating Seudat Shelishit before Sundown (8:48pm)

  1. At home after Shabbat is over (9:35pm) – say “Baruch Hamavdil Ben Kodesh L’chol” and then change into non leather shoes.

  1. Havdala is pushed off until after Tisha B’av – but we say the bracha just on the candle. We will be saying it in shul, but if you are not coming, then say at home after Shabbat.

  1. After Tisha Ba’v (before eating), one must recite the blessing of Hagafan and Hamvadil.

  1. If one does need to eat on Tisha B’av – Havdala should be recited prior to eating
